Reunion Reports

85th Annual Reunion, York 14th October 2017

Hunmanby Hall Old Girls’ Association 85th Reunion

We had a fantastic day at The Principal Hotel in York (formerly The Royal York Hotel) where 169 of us gathered together for the annual lunch on Saturday 14th October 2017.  After an early morning committee meeting everyone gathered in the Events Suite to register and claim their large label.  This meant that it was easy to identify our peers and other friends without the need for glasses!  Rachel Kirkwood (née Dibdin), our Reunion Secretary had thought of everything which had involved a lot of planning.  We are indebted to her for her hard work.

The round tables allowed conversation to flow freely – not that we needed much encouragement!  After the initial excitement and greetings had died down, as Chairman I was able to welcome everyone. The Lamp was then lit and everyone joined in to say The Flame Prayer.  Following that, a very appropriate grace was said by Margaret Jeffery (néeClarke), our hardworking and dedicated secretary.  Margaret managed to attend the Reunion, take the minutes and then go to a family wedding all in one day!  The grace can be found at the end of this report.

A delicious lunch of salmon, followed by sticky toffee pudding was enjoyed by all, but with special diets being catered for.  After coffee was served, I conducted a brief AGM.  My Chairman’s report can be read in the AGM minutes which will be available on the website in due course.  Having enjoyed 3 years as Chairman I was delighted to hand over to Erica Stary (née Smith) as the next Chairman.

After lunch there was time to view the large display of memorabilia which Liz Heather (née Gledhill) had kindly brought to York, after sorting through it all and storing it carefully.  There was also a table with old Javelins and unidentifiable photographs for people to take home if they so wished.  (The Association has a separate, complete set of Javelins in the archives.)

Jane Wallace, the Javelin editor, sold a few copies of the current and final version of the Javelin.  She still has a few copies left if you wish to purchase a copy of this bumper edition.

There was plenty of time to catch up with friends and many people drifted on to enjoy other parts of this beautiful hotel until late afternoon.  My thanks to everyone who contributed to make this Reunion such an enjoyable event, but mostly to all of you who made the effort to attend the day.

Sue Rankin

We thank you Lord before we dine
For food and friends and laughter
So may we feast and drink good wine
And still rejoice the morning after.

Amen.

For bread and jam
And beans on toast
We thank you Father and Holy Ghost

Amen.
